6) Many information technology manager come from senior technical positions. What can you do to help them transition into the project management role.
If I was a project manager, to help someone in this transition from a technical position into a project management role I would share my experiences and give him advice in managing people. If it is possible, I would introduce this person to a team to make him familiar with different team members and their diverse personalities and abilities. I would also make this person realize that he is going to represent his team and has to be updated of new technologies and he has to keep improving his skills.

I agree with you comments
ReplyDeleteI will also added that I would advise this Senior Technical manager to study the PMI guide and take the exam to be certified. This would give him or her theoretical comprehension of project management. In order to gain the experience and practical knowledge of project management, he or she should shadow an experienced Project manager on several projects. Also, he or she could be incorporated into project teams lead by Project managers. By observing experience project managers on how they operate and manage the activities and the personnel on the project team, this would definitely be good preparation for the transition from senior technical manager to project manager.

I will like to add that some hands-on training and meetings with seasoned project managers would greatly increase the chances of a smooth transition to a managerial position.
ReplyDeleteGood! Another example of team collaboration. Keep it up!
